The NSpine Advanced Anterior Scoliosis Techniques Course

July 17th 2021

Recent years have seen significant advances in anterior scoliosis surgery especially in the domain of dynamic correction. Whilst these techniques are very promising, they are surgically demanding requiring both mastery of open anterior and minimally invasive approaches to both the thoracic and lumbar spine.

In recognition of the training need, NSpine is therefore providing advanced training which is combined cadaveric and live tissue in nature.

Delegates first learn the standard approaches and then hone these under live tissue conditions both with open techniques and minimally invasive and endoscopically assisted techniques.

This course is particularly relevant for experienced deformity surgeons who wish to expand their practice with anterior motion preserving technology. The event furthermore offers complications management during the live tissue component of the event.

The faculty consists of highly experienced spinal surgeons routinely having practiced these techniques for several years.

Join us for this exceptional educational event held at the IRCAD centre in Strasbourg, France which provides state of the art facilities for cadaveric and live tissue training.

Advanced Scoliosis Techniques Course

Course Format

Full day hands-on surgical training course consisting of cadaveric training in the morning and live tissue training in the afternoon. Faculty : delegate ratio is 1:2.

Learning Objectives

  • To perform standard anterior open, mini-open and endoscopic approaches to the thoracic spine
  • To perform standard open and mini-open lateral approaches to the lumbar spine
  • To expand the approaches to a full thoracophrenolumbotomy
  • To effectively and correctly instrument the thoracic and lumbar spine from above mentioned approaches
  • To apply corrective manoeuvres and techniques for anterior scoliosis correction
  • To effectively manage complications arising from anterior thoracic and lumbar approaches in live tissue surgery including pulmonary and vascular surgeries

Learning Outcomes

  • Perform the technical steps of the open anterior approach to the thoracic and lumbar spine
  • Perform mini-open and thoracoscopic access to the thoracic spine
  • Expand a thoracic or lumbar approach to include splitting of the diaphragm
  • Identify the structures at risk during anterior spinal surgery and have salvage strategies in place in case of complications
  • Correctly perform anterior instrumentation of the thoracic and lumbar spine for the purpose of deformity correction

Training Structure

AM Session

Cadaveric training is conducted in the morning, allowing delegates to become familiar with the required anterior approaches to the spine. The cadaveric training will commence with mini-open approaches to the thoracic and lumbar spine, extending to full thoracophrenolumbotomy. Correct handling of relevant implants and systems of sponsors is included during this period.

PM Session

The afternoon is dedicated to live tissue surgery which will allow delegates to perform mini-open and thoracoscopic procedures. NSpine has attracted an international panel of recognised experts to train delegates in mini-open and thoracoscopic anterior scoliosis correction techniques including vertebral body tethering. Thoracic and vascular surgeons are on-site to teach complications management techniques.

Theory

The theory content related to the techniques is covered at the Porto Main meeting during the previous days July 13-16. Delegates not attending Porto will be able to join these lectures by video conference.

The course content is identical on both days with separate groups of delegates.
