The NSpine Advanced Lumbar 360° Reconstructive Course

July 17th & 18th 2021

Recent advances in minimally invasive anterior and posterior now allow a retroperitoneal minimally invasive access to all regions of the lumbar and thoracic spine.

These new technologies are demanding and complication management within these techniques is particularly challenging. In recognition of the training need, NSpine has built on the foundation of the previous complications management course and combined this with dedicated access and live tissue training.

This course will therefore focus on cadaveric minimally invasive axis training with a focus on lateral and anterior approaches to the spine, expanding these to full open approaches and then conducting the procedures during the live tissue component of the event which focuses more strongly on the complications management which includes vascular and visceral repair.

The expert faculty consists of highly experienced spine surgeons and a panel of vascular, thoracic, and urological surgeons to help master the complications management strategies.

Advanced Lumbar 360 Degree Reconstructive Surgery Course

Course Format

Full day hands-on surgical training course consisting of cadaveric training in the morning and live tissue training in the afternoon. Faculty : delegate ratio is 1:2.

Learning Objectives

  • To perform anterior open (ALIF) and mini-open lateral approaches (OLIF / XLIF) to the lumbar spine
  • To expand the approaches to a full thoracophrenolumbotomy
  • To effectively and correctly instrument the lumbar spine from above mentioned approaches
  • To apply corrective manoeuvres and techniques for anterior reconstructive correction
  • To effectively manage complications arising from anterior lumbar approaches in live tissue surgery including vascular techniques

Learning Outcomes

  • Perform the technical steps of the open anterior and lateral approaches to the lumbar spine
  • Perform mini-open lateral access to the lumbar spine
  • Expand the lumbar approach to include splitting of the diaphragm
  • Identify the structures at risk during anterior spinal surgery and use salvage strategies in case of complications
  • Correctly perform anterior and lateral interbody instrumentation of the lumbar spine

Coronavirus Statement

NSpine intends to provide a pre-conference Covid-19 screening service which is included in the registration fee.

Training Structure

AM Session

Cadaveric training is conducted in the morning, allowing delegates to become familiar with the required approaches to the spine. The cadaveric training will commence with mini-open approaches to the lumbar spine, extending to full thoracophrenolumbotomy. Correct handling of relevant implants and systems of sponsors is included during this period.

PM Session

The afternoon is dedicated to live tissue surgery which will allow delegates to perform anterior and lateral exposures of the spine mobilising vascular and visceral structures. NSpine has attracted an international panel of recognised experts to train delegates in mini-open and open reconstructive techniques. Vascular surgeons are on-site to teach complications management techniques.

The theory content related to the techniques is covered at the Porto Main Meeting during the previous days July 13-16. Delegates not attending Porto will be able to join these lectures by video conference.

The course content is identical on both days with separate groups of delegates.
